Canal Boat Contemporary is an independent gallery built onto the side of a working canal boat, moored at changing locations across London. Our gallery space is a reclaimed post office noticeboard, now a towpath-facing vitrine, that hosts a new artist each week.
The project was founded and is run by artist Pushka, whose studio is inside the boat itself. What began in 2024 as an experiment in visibility, intimacy, and access has grown into a rolling platform for emotionally charged, ambitious, and painterly work.
We show artists at all stages of their careers - from emerging to established names - with a focus on figurative and expressive practices. Each show is freely visible 24/7 to anyone walking by. This openness, combined with the boat’s mobility, creates a unique blend of gallery, street intervention, and travelling cabinet of curiosities.
So far we’ve hosted over 20 exhibitions - including installations, performances, and our Miniatures Challenge - and have attracted attention from collectors, curators, and the public alike. We’ve sold work directly from the towpath, seen artists picked up for solo shows, and built a growing community around the boat.
It’s all fuelled by curiosity, improvisation, and the joy of doing things differently.
