Skull (miniature #2)
8.6 x 6.3 cm
Oil on paper
2025

The skull is a neutral image of identity, representing the essence of humanity stripped of surface and status.  I’m drawn to its quiet democracy and simplicity, even more resonant in its miniature form. It reveals what unites us beneath difference; our shared fragility, transience and enduring trace of being human.

Mason’s paintings evolve from observations of social behaviour, culture and nature; exploring the idiosyncrasies of the everyday.  Their figures are often in a state of flux, unstable in their own world. Like the skull there are often recurring motifs with both personal and shared symbolism.
